Peach and Blueberry Galette and Facing Addiction

This past weekend I hung out with some remarkably talented bloggers at the BlogHer conference in San Fransisco.

I was gone for two whole days, Saturday and Sunday. Monday, when I got home, I went to two supermarkets, Costco, and a farmers' market. When I pulled into my parking space and opened my back door, I realized that I needed a cart to bring all my groceries up. Suddenly it hit me, like a ton of bananas. I stood staring at my back seat and open trunk, every inch covered with bags. "Wow, that's a lot of food," I mumbled to myself. I had just gone shopping before we left, and it's only Jeff and me.

I couldn't move. Standing alone in my parking garage with the car doors open, I was ready to admit it: "My name is Susan, and I'm a food shopaholic."

Ignoring reality, I got all the groceries upstairs and consoled myself the only way I know how. I started cooking.

With two pounds of fresh fragrant yellow peaches and three pints of plump, juicy blueberries beckoning me, I called up my San Diego girlfriend, Miss C, to see if she wanted to hang out for a while. (She never says no.) You remember her, don't you? Our friendship had gotten off to a rocky start, but then my mom helped smooth things over between us. And now? We're real tight.

My girl Miss C. and I got right down to business and whipped up a remarkably easy and flavorful cornmeal dough from Cooking Light for a galette. I used coarse cornmeal so each bite has a wonderfully crunchy texture and rich corn flavor. It's light and flaky, not too rich and not too sweet -- the perfect vessel for a cinnamon and vanilla laced peach and blueberry fruit filling.

I thought I would bring it to my first FSA (Food Shopaholics Anonymous) meeting. So far, only Miss C. and I are signed up, but I am sure there are lots of you out there. You know who you are.

Peach and Blueberry Galette

Serves 8

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup coarse cornmeal
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cold butter, cut into small pieces
1/3 cup fat-free buttermilk

Fruit Filling:
2 1/2 cups fresh blueberries
3 cups thinly sliced peaches (about 3 large)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup light brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon fresh minced ginger
3 tablespoons cornstarch

1 egg white
2 tablespoons fat-free milk
1 tablespoon turbinado sugar

To make the dough, combine flour, sugar, cornmeal, and salt in a processor; pulse 2-3 times. Add butter and pulse 4-5 times, or until mixture resembles coarse meal. With the processor running, slowing pour the buttermilk through the chute, processing until the dough forms a ball. Remove the dough ball and adhere any remaining pieces of dough to it, then wrap in plastic wrap or parchment paper. Refrigerate for 30-35 minutes.

Center a rack in the oven and preheat to 350 degrees F.

To make the fruit filling, combine all ingredients in a large bowl, and toss gently, making sure that the cornstarch is coating the fruit. (This will prevent too much juice from leaking out while the galette bakes.)

Remove the dough from the refrigerator and place on a sheet of parchment paper. Starting at the center of the dough, roll out, forming a 14-15-inch wide circle. Place the dough with parchment paper on a baking sheet. Add the fruit mixture to the center of the dough, leaving a 2-inch border. Fold the border over the filling, overlapping where necessary and pressing gently to adhere the folds.

Lightly whisk the egg white and milk in a small bowl. Brush dough with egg wash, and sprinkle with turbinado sugar. Bake for 1 hour, or until crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Transfer the baking sheet to a wire rack to cool for at least 20 minutes. (Cutting it too quickly will cause the dough to crack). It's best served at room temperature or slightly warm. Optional garnishes include vanilla ice cream, a dollop of creme fraiche, or freshly whipped cream.

This sounds lovely :) I make a blueberry and nectarine baked 'custard' pie (variation on the Joy of Cooking Peach custard pie) so I already love this combination. This sounds like it would be a much lighter relative of that!

I never have been able to get on with peaches though. I tend to think it's because I don't like the furriness of the skin, but then I like apricots so that doesn't really make sense.

I'm not a baker... so a couple of questions. If I make this.
1) Can I use 1% milk instead of non-fat - or does that screw things up?
2) What is turbinado sugar? Can I just use my plain ole sugar - or does that screw things up?
3) Can I use frozen blueberries?
I plan on taking this to a Concert in the Park? Will it travel well?

I'm totally a food shopaholic. Usually, though, I have two teenage boys at home to deal with the excess. They're at camp for the summer, though, so I pretty much had to quit cold turkey. On the other hand, I saved a lot of money on the food budget.

Good looking galette! I've been doing the "add some cornmeal to the crust" trick with quiche. Makes it amazingly better somehow.

I'm taking my addiction one step at a time :) Yesterday I was staring at a bottle of malt powder at the grocery and I was saying to myself, "No, Manggy. You have next to no use for this." But I really really wanted to buy it to make 2 desserts before stocking the bottle till it goes bad. Haha.
However, the addiction can't be too bad if you end up with a parade of yummy galettes ;) Gorgeous!

I'm Sharon & I'm a Food Shopaholic. :) There are times when I stop and think, what day of the week haven't I gone to the grocery store? I also love when I go to grocery stores out of town, knowing I can't really buy anything but love perusing anyway.

PS The galette looks delicious. I probably need to go to the store to buy some of those ingredients...ahh! There I go again...

Oh my, this is D-lish! I know the feeling about Costco. When I cart everything inside & manage to squeeze all of the food into various shelves & pantries, I take a big sigh of relief that everything has its place. Then, 3 days later everything is gone again. I love buy fruit in bulk b/c you just have to eat it quickly.

I'm Jeanne and HELL YES, I'm a food shopaholic! My problem becomes most apparent when we get back from a holiday in Europe and every item of clothign that I unpack is wrapped around a bottle or a tin of somethign edible. People treat our kitchen shelves like a League of Nations Food display ;-)

You are not alone in your addiction. I just lugged a million pounds (or at least that's what it felt like) of groceries back from the store, and I only have 2 people to cook for as well. At least you have a car, I had a 1/2 mile walk with no cab in sight. I'm counting that as my workout for today. :) And your galette is just so beautiful it makes me want to run back for some peaches!

cayce-Southern California. Sure!
1. Yes, that's fine.
2. Those large sugar crystals also called "Sugar in the Raw." You want to use those for the texture. They give that pretty crystallized texture that granulated sugar can't. It's available at supermarkets, and in a pinch, grab a couple packets next time you're in a coffee shop!
4. It should travel well. I suggest letting it cool completely before moving/wrapping it. Also don't put it in tupperware which could make the crust soft. Just a dish and tinfoil will do.

I was on my way to becoming a FSA, one day I realized I couldn't live with the fact that I was wasting food when so many people don't have enough. That was making me really ashamed and irritated with myself. I now shop for what I need only, save a lot of money per week, but the best part is looking at my pantry and refrigerator shelves at the end of the week and see that it's almost empty. It's a real good feeling!

I've just recently started making galettes and I have to say they're now one of my favorite things to make. So easy, pretty and delicious! What gorgeous colors with the peaches and blueberries, it looks delicious! And instead of enrolling me in FSA, my better half decided long ago that HE would do the shopping, he's able to stick to the list. :)

This looks absolutely delicious, Susan! I am a sucker for a yummy galette. I am a foodoholic, too. My husband and I don't own a car but we rented one a few weeks ago to visit family. Well, when we got back I persuaded him into a food run and, needless to say - and despite that we, too, are only 2 people - we ended up with a watermelon, 2 lbs. of blueberries, 1 lb. of blackberries, about 15 kiwi, and 3 lbs. of cherries. And we ate every bit of it (and so much more) before leaving town again the next week!

Waaahhhhhhhh I am far far away from civilization right now and I am CRAVING fresh fruit - a few nights ago, I literally had a dream about picking and eating fresh peaches and they were the sweetest, most candy-like peaches ever. Cannot wait to get home and make this (assuming I can stop myself from eating the peaches straight first)!

I need to join the Farmer's Market version of FSA - would that be FMSA, or FM-FSA? My last confessable offense: I bought black currants even though I had no idea what to do with them (this was on top of 5 billion other pounds of produce, including my CSA share. Is there a CSA wing of the FSA?). Hmm, maybe I should make a galette - they're such a fun and tasty treat!

this was so good! I had a few problems with it (all my own fault), but that didn't stop it from being completely finished at the party I took it to! I refrigerated the dough overnight, so it was very cold and took quite some time to roll out. I made the mistake of making the filling before rolling it out, so it had quite some time to sit and get very juicy. And even more juice came out while baking, so there was juice everywhere! But the crust held up beautifully! I think next time I'll make the crust, stick it in the fridge, and then work on the filling. Even with my exploding filling, and the fact that I skipped the egg wash and turbinado sugar, this got rave reviews and everyone demanded the recipe!
